NEED FOR LEGISLATION:
Sandra, You are so right. Whenever I and a group of concerned citizens met with our Calhoun County Animal Control Center Director, Assistant Director and county commissioners back in November concerning the deplorable conditions there, I found that there is no legislation whatsoever for humane conditions – just that the shelter be “satisfactory,” which is a vague term, depending on what the community deems “satisfactory.” We certainly have a long, long way to go in Alabama, but thank God, caring people as yourself are finally making their voices be heard. A group of us are meeting with Bradley Byrne on Monday to determine, if elected, whether he would consider establishing a Companion Animal Division to make recommendations to the Legislature and Governor on ending the pet overpopulation problem and on humane legislation. I feel that he will be receptive, but will keep you posted.

ALDF Takes Kentucky Counties to Task for Failing to Protect Homeless Dogs and Cats

This is a perfect example of why Alabama needs Mandated Humane Standards for Animal Facilities written, adopted into law. EVEN in Kentucy, where unsuitable and inhumane conditions abound in shelters, at least they have a law to turn to, for a citizen/s to demand application in instances of shelter abuse/cruelty/neglect and substandard conditions.
If you agree, please write and call your legislators, candidates for offices in Alabama, and your local government officials, asking for the creation and enforcement powers of an official STATE board/dept/entitiy to offer some legal protection for the thousands of impounded dogs and cats in Alabama Animal Facilities.
Thanks, - for the animals
